Stephen was born in Hampshire in 1943, and his formative years were spent in the delightful coastal village of Emsworth, on theHampshire-Sussex borders. The time he spent observing and sketching the local wildlife and marine activities served as initiation into the world of fine art. His accomplished draughtsmanship later
secured him a place at the Sussex College of Art, where he studied graphics and illustration. Stephen subsequently spent many years in the graphics industry, but his interest however lay beyond the office walls.

           He eventually decided to take the plunge and turned his life long love of painting into his chosen profession, moving to an idyllic small cottage set in a river valley in the heart of the West Country. The art world is richer as a result and time is allowing his full potential to be realised. Stephen painstakingly and meticulously researches his subject, ensuring it is technically accurate, prior to putting paint to canvas.

Stephen also paints some lovely cityscapes but in a looser style.  To delineate these, he goes under the pseudonym of "McGrath"
